2009-2010 ACTIVITIES

NASA Moon Rocks
For two weeks in December, Scioto students got to view moon rocks on loan from NASA. The Scioto 4th grade teachers incorporated the moon rocks with an activity they planned to give their students a better understanding of science concepts.
The students used rocks, sand paper and toast to demonstrate what happens when meteorites hit both the moon and the earth.
Fourth grade teacher Carmen TarbillI said she was  pleased to see that many students were able to write very detailed explanations of their experiment and they were able to make predictions based on what they learned.
“When they saw the moon rocks, they were able to make a connection with what the surface of the moon is really like. They were so excited and motivated throughout the entire activity.  Being able to see the lunar and meteorite samples made this a memorable experience for everyone,” she said.

Scioto Township Building Field Trip
The 3rd grade students visited the Scioto Township building in Commercial Point on November 5. They heard from a township trustee, as well as the fire chief. They took a tour of the grounds and learned about the jobs of the trustees and the responsibilities of the office. The firefighters also spoke to the students about their role in the community. The fire trucks and ambulances were also there for the students to see and learn about.
" One of the 3rd grade State indicators is to identify local leaders and explain the structure of local government. This was an opportunity for our kids to visit a local government building a hear about the structure from a local leader," 3rd grade teacher Laura Nungester said.
